Kyle Mitsunaga, MD
Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga is a board-certified, fellowship-trained adult and pediatric orthopaedic spine surgeon, offering a wide range of nonsurgical and surgical interventions to treat neck and back-related conditions. His expertise includes various surgical interventions to treat common spine problems such as herniated discs and spinal stenosis. He also specializes in treating spinal deformities such as scoliosis, degenerative spinal conditions, as well as spinal fractures and tumors. He has a particular interest in osteoporosis-related spine fractures and bone health management.
Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga strives to help each feel comfortable, confident, and involved in their spine care. This requires different approaches for each patient, so he customizes patient care based on each patient’s unique priorities. For Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga, utilizing cutting-edge diagnostic tools and surgical techniques is a large part of his practice, but not as important as talking to patients and their families to jointly decide what treatment plan makes the most sense for them as an individual.
Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga completed two adult and pediatric spine surgery fellowships at premier spine surgery programs: Stanford University and UC San Francisco Medical Center. Prior to his spine surgery training, he received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. He also completed an internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California Davis Medical Center.
Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga is a leader in the orthopaedic and spine surgery community in Hawaii. He is a Course Director and Chair for the annual UCSF Pediatric and Adult Spine Surgery Course, an annual four-day educational conference that brings together leaders in the field of spine surgery to talk about the latest advances in treating complex spine disorders. He is also a member of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), a prestigious organization comprised of leaders in the orthopaedic community. Membership in the AOA is based on contributions to the field of orthopaedics and is offered to only 6% of practicing orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga launched the Bone Health Clinic at Queen’s Medical Center to address the epidemic we are seeing in osteoporosis-related fragility fractures. The goal of this clinic is to address the issue of bone health and to prevent future osteoporosis-related fractures in our patients. He is on the speaker’s bureau for Amgen and has traveled around the US giving talks on osteoporosis and bone health management.
Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga serves as Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Queen’s Medical Center and the Medical Director for the Spine Surgery Program at Queen’s Medical Center.
